How To Fix Apple Weather App Not Working

With more than 1 Billion users globally, social media platforms like Twitter are flooded with posts about the Apple weather app not loading or working or showing correct data. The tweets or posts were not only from the U.S. only, it was causing trouble for almost every user around the globe. Some users however got rid of this with some basic troubleshooting, some have to contact Apple and seek help.

I have also used Apple products for a long time, earlier the Weather app used to be only on iPhone and Apple watches, but with time the app was then integrated into iPad, Apple TV, and Macbook. It’s not something new or something that has happened for the very first time. Out of my habit, I have always jotted down the troubleshooting which has worked mostly for me in such issues. In this post, I will share my personal experience along with some hard research and surveys conducted with many acquaintances.

Apple itself has confirmed this issue on its system status web page and has said that the weather app “may be slow or unavailable”. Let’s quickly understand this issue, when it started, how it’s affecting users, and what common measures you can undertake to fight back against this. 

The company’s website has also mentioned that the outages started in the middle of 2023 and are still affecting some users. However, no confirmation on when this will be resolved has been released by the company, they are working on it.

As per a report, many users have noticed that the weather app on their devices is loading much slower than usual and is consuming much time to show updated reports or data. For some users, the app isn’t even updating or loading and for some others, the weather widget is showing a “No weather data” notification.

How To Troubleshoot Apple Weather App Not Working

 Let’s try some troubleshoots, which is easy to perform, just the simple processes for each explained below;

1. Restarting The iPhone

One of the most simple, the foremost one which comes to our mind and obviously the one which mostly solves most of the issues. Just a quick restarting holds the potential to clear out many issues that are preventing your Weather app from working. 

1. Press and then quickly release the Volume Up button, then repeat this with the Volume Down button.
2. Press and hold the power button and don’t release and wait for your device to restart.

2. Updating The iPhone OS 

Any pending system updates could cause such issues. An outdated version of the OS mostly causes such malfunctioning with apps like Weather or the Weather widget. Check for any updates due in the settings and ensure you’re using the latest iOS® to avoid any software glitches because an updated operating system can wash out any such problems you’re having.

1. Open Settings and tap General. 
2. Tap Software Update. 
3. In case an update is available, tap download and Install. 

A tip from my personal experience, in case the Weather app isn’t working on your Apple Watch®, try updating the OS on your iPhone and watch and this should solve the problem. 

3. Checking The Internet Connection

The Weather app is an internet-based app, and it must be connected to the strong internet for strong functioning. Make sure that you have a strong cellular or wi-fi connection.

• Check your wi-fi, try turning it off, and then on again:  Open Settings > Wi-Fi and turn it off, wait for a few seconds, and then tap to turn it on again. 
• For a complete reset, try switching to Airplane mode for a few seconds and then turn it off: Open Settings and tap the Airplane mode to turn it on, wait for a few seconds, and then tap to switch it off again. 

4.Checking Location Allowances

Your iPhone is equipped with the capability to know your device’s current location but in case you’ve turned off Location services for privacy concerns, then you must try turning it back on for the Weather app to work smoothly. For your Apple Watch, you’ll have to update location settings for both your iPhone and Apple Watch.

1. On your iPhone, tap the Watch app. 
2. Go to My Watch and then tap Weather then tap Default City and select Current Location. Check if the app is working now or follow the next troubleshooting.

5. Restarting The Weather App

If even after trying the above troubleshoots, you are still facing issues with the weather app, then I would suggest you try restarting it. For the iPhone X and later versions:

1. On your Home screen, swipe up from the bottom and stop in the middle of the screen. 
2. Swipe left or right to see the Weather app. 
3. Swipe up on the app’s preview for closing the app. 
4. Reopen the app after a minute or two and check if it’s working normally.

6. Updating The Weather App 

Likewise your device’s OS, your Weather also needs an updated version to work on your iPhone. 

1. Go to the App Store and then tap on your profile icon. 
2. Scroll down and find the weather app from the listed apps
3. Tap Update on the Weather app. 

7. Uninstalling And Reinstalling The Weather App 

It’s frustrating if you are still stuck, try the below steps and see what happens next;  

1. Press and hold the Weather App icon on your Home screen.
2. Then select Remove App, from the pop menu.
3. To download it again, go to the App Store, search for the Weather app, and tap Get. 

8. Contact Apple Support

Lastly, if you are still not able to get rid of the issue and if the Apple Weather app is still not functioning properly, then it must be something from the Apple end and you must then try contacting them and explain your issue and seek help.

The issue comes uninvited with technology, but with constant updates from the developers, they can’t keep it long. Simultaneously there are numerous things and processes that are happening inside our devices for the overall smooth functioning of the hardware and the software. It’s technology after all and it’s not going to be smarter than us who developed it, issues might slow down the process sometimes but cannot overall stop it from happening.
